The importance of the Tuscan composer Francesco Gasparini (1661-1727) on the European scene in the early eighteenth century has not yet been fully understood by modern audiences. Certainly, the refinement and variety of a work like Ambleto demonstrates not only its artistic quality, but also its capacity to serve as an essential model for many great musicians of his time, such as Handel and Vivaldi.
Ambleto is the first production of Shakespeare's story of Hamlet. The libretto, born from the collaboration between some of the greatest Venetian intellectuals of the time, Pietro Pariati and Apostolo Zeno, was set to music by Gasparini, who had acquired the post of Maestro di Cappella at the Ospedale della Pietà in the same years in which Vivaldi took his first steps as a teacher…
